Cosmetic Lip Injections (Botox®)

Botox® lip injections continue to rank as one of the favorite ways to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while also helping to prevent the formation of new signs of aging.

What Is Botox Lip Injections?

Botox is a lip injection that contains small amounts of a highly purified botulinum toxin protein refined from the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. This active ingredient works to relieve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines in the lips by targeting the underlying muscles responsible for the repeated contractions and relaxing them in a controlled manner while reducing muscle activity in the lip area. Botox is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The Right Approach for Your Lip Injections

During your lip injections consultation, we’ll carefully evaluate your target areas and design a specific plan based around your personal goals. For the very best results, Dr. Tse may also recommend combining Botox with another minimally invasive treatment like lip fillers.

What Are Lip Injection Treatments Like?

Treatments with Botox typically only take about 10 to 15 minutes to perform. Lip injections are relatively painless, with some patients only reporting a pinching sensation at the injection site. For further comfort, a topical numbing cream may be applied prior to your lip injection treatment.

How Long Do Botox Lip Injections Last?

Botox lip injections are an effective yet temporary solution to rejuvenating your lips. On average, treatments with Botox usually last anywhere from three to six months, and can be performed two to three times a year to keep the signs of aging at bay.

Is There Any Downtime with Lip Injections?

There is little to no downtime or recovery period associated with Botox lip injections. Following your session, you can immediately return to work or your normal daily activities. Dr. Tse will provide you with any specific aftercare guidelines to ensure the best results.

When Will I See Results from Lip Injections?

You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours after treatment with Botox for lip injections. Your moderate to severe lip lines will start to soften and smooth out as the underlying muscle activity is reduced. In the following weeks, you’ll begin noticing gradual improvements in the look of your lips. Surface lines and wrinkles will continue to fade, restoring a naturally youthful appearance.

What Are the Side Effects of Botox Lip Injections?

Side effects of Botox lip injections are minimal. Most patients may see some bruising, bleeding, pain, redness, or swelling where the lip injections were given, but those symptoms typically subside fairly quickly after the procedure. There were some other side effects that were observed in clinical trials. Possible adverse effects such as dry mouth, tiredness, headache, neck pain, eye problems, muscle weakness, and allergic reactions can occur.

Certain medications may negatively interact with Botox lip injections as well, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. It’s very important that you discuss all of the medicines and treatments you use with your provider to ensure a healthy Botox experience.

Other Uses

  • Botox is the first and only FDA-cleared preventive treatment for chronic migraines.
  • Injections with Botox can alleviate urinary incontinence by relaxing the bladder and allowing it to store more urine. It can also address other OAB symptoms such as the strong need to urinate with leakage, urgency, and frequency in adults.
  • Botox can relieve excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) by temporarily blocking the chemical signals that stimulate the sweat glands in the armpits.
  • Botox can also be prescribed to treat severe, uncontrollable spasms and stiffness in the neck muscles, called “cervical dystonia (CD)”. CD can make those muscles tighten, forcing your head into an abnormal and painful position. Botox is injected directly into muscles to alleviate the pain and make them relax.
